Google Business Profile Setup for an Indian Small Business

The free listing that decides whether anyone finds you. How to set it up properly, and the five mistakes that quietly keep you out of the map pack.

For most small businesses in India, the Google Business Profile is more important than the website. It is what appears in the map pack, what shows on the right of a search for your name, and what a customer reads before deciding to come. It is free, and it is usually half-finished.

Step 1: check whether a listing already exists

Search your business name in an incognito window before creating anything. Many Indian businesses already have an auto-generated listing built from other data sources. Claiming that one is far better than creating a second, because a duplicate splits your reviews and your ranking between two entries.

Step 2: claim and verify

Verification is Google confirming the business exists where you say it does. Depending on the category and the country you may get a postcard, a phone call, an email, or a video verification where you walk through the premises on camera showing signage, equipment and proof you have access.

Video verification is now common in India. Prepare for it: have your signage visible, the shutter open, some branded packaging or equipment to hand, and a document proving your connection to the business. A failed attempt costs you weeks, so it is worth doing carefully once.

Step 3: get the category right

The primary category does more for what you rank for than anything else on the profile, and owners routinely pick one that is too broad. "Restaurant" is weaker than "South Indian restaurant" if that is what you are, because the specific one competes in a smaller field and matches a more specific search.

Add secondary categories for real services you provide, but do not stuff them. A salon that adds "spa", "nail salon" and "hair salon" because it genuinely does all three is fine. One that adds "gym" is not.

Step 4: fill in everything that is boring

  • Exact hours, including the days you close. A profile with wrong hours generates one-star reviews from people who arrived to a closed shutter.
  • A phone number that is answered during those hours. The number on the listing gets called.
  • Services or products, listed individually. These are searchable and almost nobody fills them in.
  • The business description — 750 characters, written for a human, mentioning what you do and the area you serve once, naturally.
  • Attributes that apply: parking, wheelchair access, home delivery, accepted payment methods.

Step 5: photos, and then more photos

Photos are the difference between a listing that reads as a live business and one that reads as an entry in a database. Get the exterior with the signage visible so people can recognise it from the street, the interior, the actual products or work, and the team. Keep adding a few every month — a listing that gained new photos last week looks open in a way a static one does not.

Step 6: start collecting reviews on day one

A verified listing with complete information and zero reviews still loses to a scruffier listing with sixty. Reviews are the part of the profile you cannot fill in yourself, which is exactly why they carry weight — and the only way to get them is to ask, from the first week.

Get your review link first, then decide how you will ask for reviews every day.

How to get your Google review link

Five mistakes that quietly cost you

  1. 1Keyword-stuffing the business name — "Sharma Dental Best Dentist In Jaipur" violates Google’s naming policy and is a common cause of suspension and of competitor edit reports.
  2. 2A virtual office or a home address for a business customers cannot visit. If you serve customers at their location, set it up as a service-area business and hide the address instead.
  3. 3Leaving the listing alone for a year. Posts, photos and replies all signal an active business.
  4. 4Letting an agency verify the listing on their own account. When you part ways, they own your listing. Verify it yourself and add them as a manager.
  5. 5Never checking the Q&A section. Anyone can answer questions on your listing, including people who are wrong.

Once the profile is set up, the ongoing work is the review flow — and that is the part software helps with.

Common questions

Do I need a website to have a Google Business Profile?

No. The profile works on its own and includes a basic site option. A real website helps, but a complete profile with reviews matters more for local search.

Can I run a Business Profile without a shop address?

Yes — as a service-area business. You give the areas you cover and hide the street address. Do not list a rented mailbox as a premises; that is a suspension risk.

How long does verification take in India?

Anywhere from a day for phone or email to two or three weeks for postcard verification. Video verification is usually the fastest route when it is offered.
